This is a very popular bag, it has so much potential.
You can use any colour, you can use a purse lock as I did, or you can use snap buttons, or you just use as it is without any closure. You can add a tassel, you can add pom-pom, you can add charms to dress the purse up. You can crochet a strap, you can attach a chain, or you can attach a leather strap to it. You can sew a lining with a packet into it
The material:
I've been using this rope material from Dollarama for awhile now for my bags, and I love it!
Why? Because in my opinion this material gives you a really nice, and professional look to your project and it's so much durable than any other yarn. It's approx. 1.5mm cord. The only issue with it is wave in the ends is quite challenging. I always make a knot before waving, to make it more secure, but you have to tight it really hard otherwise it will unravel. And because it's a nylon kind of material, I singe the ends with a lighter as well.

You can absolutely use cotton yarn, but in this case I suggest to sew a lining in to make the bag more durable.
The gauge with my material is 16st x 18 rows with 2.5mm hook and with the pattern used in 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) square. If your gauge is smaller than mine, your bag will be smaller, and if your gauge is larger, your bag will be bigger.
What other bags did I make with this material?
I made my Ruby Purse, Maroon Clutch, Pearl Handbag, Pearl Bumbag, Jade Handbag

Navy Bag
The most important thing with this style of bag is to make the length of rectangle 3 times bigger than the width of the rectangle. So if your gauge is different from mine, you need to calculate your measurements accordingly.

What other tools do you need to make this bag?
I suggest you to use stitch markers at the beginning and end of the rows because if you're a beginner it might be easier for you to see those stitches.
I have some cute and fun stitch markers in my shop:

You will also need a really good pair of scissors. Especially if you'll use the rope material I used.
Next you will need a bag lock of your choice, or a magnetic snap button. You definitely don't have to use any of these, but in my opinion the lock gives your bag a more professional look.
You'll also need a strap and 2 D-rings. I used chain from Michaels, but you can use one of your purse's strap as well. You can crochet a strap for your bag if that's what you prefer.
You will need a tapestry needle with big(ger) hole for waving the ends, and a lighter to singe the ends if you're NOT using natural fiber.
Lastly if you want to use lining, you will need some (cotton) fabric.
If you want to add pom-pom or tassel I have pom-pom and tassel makers in my shop.
